Choosing an engine sound for your Tesla: six questions to ask
There are kits fitted under the car and apps that run in the Tesla's browser. Six questions are enough to tell them apart. Rupteur is us: here is what we think matters and how we answer it. Your ear has the last word.
1. Does the sound follow acceleration, or only speed?
A sound that only reads speed can't tell whether you are accelerating or cruising: it rises the same way in both cases, and lifting off makes no difference.
With Rupteur: the GPS is read up to ten times a second: speed gives the revs, acceleration gives the load.
2. Is there a real gearbox?
Without gears, the revs climb from start to finish like a siren. With them, they climb, shift, drop, as on the car being recreated.
With Rupteur: the real ratios of each recreated car, an automatic gearbox in Comfort or Dynamic, and a manual gearbox on the steering wheel scroll button.
3. Is the engine computed, or a loop played faster?
Playing a recording faster moves all its resonances up with the revs, while on a real car the exhaust resonances stay put. The ear hears a pitch-shifted sound, not an engine.
With Rupteur: the RST™ system computes each combustion event when the crankshaft commands it, through fixed exhaust resonances. On the Audi RS 3, real recordings take over at full throttle.
4. What happens when you lift off?
That's where you recognize an engine: fuel cut, pops and bangs, revs falling with the car.
With Rupteur: fuel cut on deceleration, pops and bangs once the engine is warm, exhaust valves open or closed.
5. Do you need hardware?
A kit under the car takes fitting and a budget, and it can be heard outside too. An app in the browser takes nothing, and it plays inside the cabin.
With Rupteur: nothing to install: the Tesla's browser is enough, and the sound goes through the car's audio system.
6. How do you pay, and can you listen first?
A subscription is paid every month, a one-time payment once. And an engine sound is judged by ear, not on a spec sheet.
With Rupteur: one payment, a lifetime license for one car, updates included. Every engine can be heard on the website, and all five in the car, before you pay.
